Dita Von Teese Quote About Fauxlesque

"Faux-lesque.
I hate commercialized so called "burlesque" shows, nightclubs and dance troupes. If I never see another girl group lip sync "Fever" and dance around in fishnet hose, chicken feather boas and mix-matched lingerie, it will be too soon. American classic burlesque was made famous by the striptease artists, and they took off their clothes. End of story. Burlesque was not a fashion style, so why is it that in the 1930's in burlesque audiences enjoyed gorgeous girls stripping and now 78 years later, burlesque is being sanitized? It's an insult to the stars of burlesque like Gypsy Rose Lee, Lili St. Cyr who stripped to pasties and g-strings and the fabulous Sally Rand-- who prided herself in dancing so perfectly buck-naked while still maintaining her mystery. It's important to me to keep the real, authentic, risque art of the real burlesque alive and well, not to rewrite it to suit the censors, or to cash in on a trend by destroying it." - Dita von Teese

  1. Whoah, thems strong words Dita. But I so do know what she's saying. However, until there is a widespread, agreed upon, or at least mutually respected view of how burlesque came to be and in what ways it is best presented, you're gonna get that. And who can blame a lady for just wanting to take that first, wobbly, unsure and sanitized step towards something new and invigorating? It's not necessarily something I want to see either, but with the commercialization of the art being so visible, and education being optional, it's understandable.

And I'm just gonna toss this out there, but why can't it be up to the individual what aspect of burlesque they want to honor with their performance? Some may wish to pay homage to the stripping aspect, but that's not all it's about and I support the option to choose without being treated with disdain. I totally respect the lady though, she knows her stuff and has inspired so many modern performers, I'm just sayin' my peace. :)

Oh, and btw, good luck lady tomorrow night!
